Lecture 7: Rhythm, Movement and Harmony

29/05/19 - Week 9

LECTURE

Rhythm happens when repeated element arranged in a sequence showing organized movement. Rhythm could be achieve through linear form or graduation form (e.g. from big to small).

Movement is the path the viewer's eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. It create impression of action and could be divided into two: visual flow movement achieve by placement of visual elements and directional achieve by showing the captured moment of a object in motion.

Harmony can be described as sameness, the belonging of one thing with another, can be achieve by manipulation of repeated design elements like colour, texture, shape, and form.

REFERENCE

Figure 9.1 Artwork showing Rhythm

Figure 9.2 Artwork showing Rhythm and Harmony

I was looking at the example to create rhythm at first, but soon after I decided to apply harmony as another design principle in my artwork design. Since rhythm is created through repeated visual element arranged in organized position to create the sense of movement, hence I observed the rotation effect and depth of it is created via different scale of square rotating in certain angle consistently. As a result, rhythm created.
PROGRESSION

Figure 9.3 Progression of artwork

Use selected magazine pages as my material to do paper collage, I have chose brown grey and dark grey as my combination of colour going to do because both of them can mix well and it feel pleasing to the eyes.
Secondly, I started to draw guide lines on the paper which to cut out different scale of square of 1.5cm, 1.3cm, 1.1cm, 0.9cm and 0.7cm. and the college begin.....

FINAL ARTWORK

Figure 9.4 Final Artwork using Rhythm and Harmony as design intention

Using rhythm and harmony as my main design principle in this artwork, two colours did mix well to create harmony and not contrasting to each other but could differentiate the brighter grey brown and darker grey in this artwork to create depth. Repeated of different scale of square arranged in certain sequence did show rhythm as well.

FEEDBACK
Nicely done. Shows a lot of works done, putting two layers making it looks like a square inside a square, it is consistent. This feels like the rhythm of music which is in a irregular matter.

Figure 8.8 Overview of the exhibition

Every artwork is not come out from nothing, it must have the sketches with labelling to clarify what designer needs or avoids. There is always meaning or story behind the artwork, so that it captures the reader's heart and reflects the designer's mind.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Contrast
Figure 8.9 "Attending to the Patient" 1980, Oil on board

Figure 8.10 focal point of  "Attending to the Patient" 1980, Oil on board

The above artwork show contrast as the main design principle as the focus patient is the only face facing the readers as other nurses are facing the other site, as well as the colour use on the patient is darker than any of the other parts. Characters as the fore ground and midground are all draw in detail which the background is drew in a more abstract style which brings the character pop up. All of these brings out that the patient as the main character in this artwork.

Direction
Figure 8.11 "Convalescence" 1980, Oil on board

Figure 8.12 "eye" as a strong direction pointing tool

The artist make good use of direction as the main principle in this artwork. The main feature in this artwork is that people are all looking at the patience in the centre, while the patience is looking at the reader. Eyes path could be a strong tools to guide visual flow.

Lecture 6: Dot, Line, Size and Scale

15/05/19 - Week 7

LECTURE

Dot is the smallest visual element in design.

Line is formed when two dots connected to each other or when the length of a visual element is exceed its width.

Size is the comparison of dimension in design.

Scale is the size of an object in relation with another object as a whole.

RERENCE

 Figure 7.1 Example 1

Figure 7.2 Example 2

Throughout research stage, I would more prefer to work on line since I am presenting line in the lecture. I wanted to create some portrait through rough sketching or scribble which give a sense of wildness and crazy to it as well as creating a impactful impression.

SKETCHES

Figure 7.3 Sketch 1

At first I has a hard time to decide either is to work on line or dot or combination of both but I chose line as my design approach because it was what I presented during lecture.

Figure 7.4 Sketch 2
After that I decided to work on scribble art which using roughly sketch to bring strong impact. Comment from Ms. Sherry are more towards the left one hence I proceed with that.

FINAL ARTWORK

Figure 7.5 Final Artwork (line)

In the final artwork, other that a impactful human screaming figure, I did apply principle of gestalt to create a little boy kneeling which showing his depression and lines that trapped him is turning him into a monster. Lines extended until the boundary of the page show that the pressure are coming from outside and to interact people strongly with the artwork.

FEEDBACK
Feeling that the person is really in pain, impactful and scarry.

Lecture 5: Hierarchy, Alignment, Direction and Perspective

08/05/19 - Week 6

Hierarchy is when assigning different visual characteristic in a way that able to understand info easily.

Alignment refers to edge alignment, centre alignment, horizontal alignment and vertical alignment.

Direction is about leading the eye to the next location while

  • Horizontal direction show calmness
  • Vertical direction show balance
  • Diagonal direction show excitement and movement

Perspective indicates depth in 2D which can observe the arrangement of design element clearly.

Figure 6.1 Example 1

Figure 6.2 Example 2

Throughout the research, I want to focus on one point perspective which have a obvious focal in the centre and have direction to it. From the examples that I have look through, I would try on a person is going into somewhere and brings out the story behind it.

Drafts

In the first attempt, I found hierarchy in the city view of sunway city from a certain perspective, then I decided to capture it in my phone. But due to the sun is falling down, hence the resolution of the photo in night would be blurry and the outcome is not as nice as what I observed from my eyes. There are other problems that I have gone through such as taking a balance between exposure value and exposure time in order to capture the weak orange light line of the buildings as well as balance between magnifying a photo but not to make it blurry since night scene would make it worst.

Figure 6.3 Fist attempt - original photo

Figure 6.4 First attempt - adjusting exposure value and exposure time

Figure 6.5 First attempt - magnified photo adjusted exposure time

In the second attempt, I have found that the airplanes are arranged in a order hence creating hierarchy as well as direction in the view because they were aligned in a line from near to far. I used panorama mode to capture the whole view so that the meet point of both lines could locate at the centre and the airplanes were at one- third of the whole photo.

There are still problems here for example, the reflection from the mirror and the airplane is not obvious. In the second photo, there is a airplane coming hence the red line on top of it create a strong contrast and attraction in which forcing your visual path to look at the upper left corner which is nothing there. This really destroy the composition of my photo.

Figure 6.6  Panorama view of airport
Figure 6.7 A new airplane coming and it destroy the composition.

Final Artwork
  Figure 6.8 Final Artwork

In the final artwork, my idea appears when I walk through the car park of campus below block D and E. I look up and observe there is hierarchy and direction when looking at that perspective but the problem is, it is guiding the visual path to the sky and feels empty at the end. Hence, I decided to go up and shoot from the top.

In this case, the most satisfied part for me is the image have a strong feeling that you are going to fall down from there when you look down from this perspective. Therefore, I enhance the feeling again by using photoshop to remove the fence which blocking "Me(First person view)" from falling down. Another thing I did is removing saturation, lightness and making the area outside the building which I am standing to increase the visual weight on "Me" and to make the building has the "pop up" effect.

Figure 6.9 Original Photo

Feedback:

Nice colour, and really let the viewers feel there are going to fall down or drag into the artwork.

Lecture 4: Texture, Repetition, Surface & Pattern

24/04/19 - Week 4

Texture refers to the surface quality in a work of art. Texture is use to:

  • create visual interest or a focal point in a composition

  • to create contrast within a design composition

  • to help visually balance a design composition

  • Repetition is the use of similar or connected pictorial elements.  For example, similar shapes, colours or lines that are used more than once.

Surface is the uppermost layer of a object that determine how colour reflected.

Pattern are simply a repetition of more than one design element working in concert with each other.

Figure 5.1 Using of toilet paper toll

Figure 5.2 Using of baby's breath

I wanted to create a pattern which could make people feel comfortable so I look at certain way to creates pattern and the colours as well.

Figure 5.3 Using of paper roll technique

    Figure 5.4 First attempt
First attempt is to try on a toilet paper roll to create a explosion effect, I did try to make it as the background that looks like bubble or firework. But there is a problem, the shape is fixed which may results in lack of variation, and I get stuck at this point when I only create boring pattern.

    Figure 5.5 Second attempt

Second attempt I did is actually not a pattern but I did exposed on the technique in handling the way to create a beautiful stamp. In this case, I used a bunch small flowers as the medium to create detail scattered pieces.

    Figure 5.6 Final Artwork

In order to create pattern that can be connect to itself, I continue using leaves as my medium which is what I have been practising on to create a wallpaper like texture with gold paint on black paper so that it would have a strong contrast to attract people to it. Other than leaves pattern, I did use the small flowers from second attempt  to create a background  to fill in the negative space and enhance he overall texture of it.

    Figure 5.7 Processing artwork

    Figure 5.7 Leaves as medium

    Feedback
The leaves are details, nice composition, strong contrast between gold and black colour draws your attention, good texture but it;s just not a PATTERN. A pattern should be able to connect itself . In this case, it is lack of repetition. It could be a good example of alignment or balance but not a pattern.

    Future Imaginings Talk

The speaker at the second right - Keith Song, is a crafter that promote traditional wire work on the digital platform of 21th century. He did mentioned tradition is dying nowadays but he still trying to make it alive in another way, which is make use of new technology, utilizing the digital information and making things fun.

Figure 4.3 Video that showcases Yan Chuah's Imagination world.

A digital artish but is based architechture - Chong Yan Chuah, presented only with his impressive video work in discovering an entire new planet in his imagination. I was very impressed by him in showing his imagination to the world with his 3D digital artwork, there are so unique, never could be thought of before this, really mind blowing for me, just like discovering something new. His intention of making people to believe at him is so strong to really push him to study extra skills.

    Figure 4.4  Light cave

The friendly speaker - Paul Koh, from Kezerk Innovation has shown s a lot of interactive VR stimulation such as holograms, VR sensory booster, interactive wall, rain rooom, light cave and many other things. All are open up a new world to me, he suggest us to get ready to learn new things from the industry, university is never the end.

Lecture 3: Symmetry, Asymmetry & Balance

    17/04/19 - Week 3

Symmetry is when elements are arranged in the same way on both sides of an axis.

    • Reflectional Symmetry - when elements are mirrored over the axis and exactly the same on both sides.
    • Rotational Symmetry - occurs when everything rotates around a  common centre.
    • Translational Symmetry - when elements are repeated over different location in a space.
Asymmetry is when elements are different on both sides of axis. It creates attention, variation and movement. It also use as comparison in some cases.

Balance occurs when elements on the the both sides of axis have the equal visual weight, creating a harmonious feeling. It can be achieve through colour, shape, texture, placement and line.

Figure 3.1  Example 1 showing two characters in a symmetry composition.

Figure 3.2  Example 2 showing a mother and her child in a visual balance composition.

My design intention is to connect two characters that are related while using balance as the design principle. After researching on visual weight and visual balance, I decided to have two characters that have different meaning into it but it looks visually opposite to it's depth of meaning such as a old father and a son which is one bigger and one smaller but the son could have the responsible to take care of his father.

In my draft, I more look into how to creates visual balance while using different elements. It is because I want to create something that has visual interest and not feeling bored in the artwork.

    Final Artwork

In this case, I have decided to link a handicapped person who cannot work well with his big dreams. The lion running out from his head is to shows that the strong feeling in achieving his dream, but he can't. Another meaning in this is to tell the audiences to respect handicapped people, do not judge one by look at the surface.

Regarding composition, I have decided to locate at the left side of the space using rules of third hence there is some visual weight to it, but in terms of colours, I have decided to fill in a small the small person but only outline the big lion, hence achieving visual balance hence both sides have distribute the attention from eyes.

    Feedback:

Have a really strong idea in it but the lion is not obvious enough, suggest to adjust the lion to come out from the leg until head but not just only the head.

    Lecture 2: Gestalt

    10/04/19 - Week 2

Gestalt define as object can be observed in their simplest form in which looking as a whole is more important than an individual. Principles of Gestalt are proximity, similarity, continuity, closure and symmetry.

    • Proximity happens when object close to each other and forming a group.
    • Similarity happens when objects are group togeher if they are similar to each other in terms of colours, shapes and shading.
    • Closure happens when people look through as a  whole when the object is not complete.
    • Symmetry happens when minds perceive objects are forming around a centre point.
    • Continuity happens when there is a visual lines of element guiding visual pathway and showing direction.

Figure 2.1  Example of Evil queen using gestalt design

Figure 2.2 Example of gestalt using in snow white

Initial idea is to find something that have a story behind it and try to construct a story by using gestalt principles. Hence, I focus my research on the Disney story - Snow white. Main focus is on the classic scene where snow white is almost to eat the poisonous apple.I was trying to study the image of snow white and evil queen including the kind of feeling the character have, and how to express it in simplest form. After that, I decided to focus on closure.

Figure 2.3  Draft 1: Using the symbolic` poisonous apple as main object

Figure 2.4  Draft 2: Merging of snow white and evil witch

Watching through the storyline, I have selected the three most important object that makes the story attracting me - which is snow white, black witch and poisonous apple. Next step is to working on these three elements. I did try on replace the skull's eyes of the poisonous apple to snow white and witch looking at each other. Another example is playing around the object that one can observe while only looking at one colour. When you look at the black colour, you will notice the snow white, but focusing on the white colour you could notice the witch.

    Final artwork
Figure 2.5  Snow white going towards the poisonous apple.

Figure 2.6  The witch reveal while look at the white part.

Figure 2.7  Happy Accident is that another witch revealed.

The design intention in final artwork is to reveal the scene when snow white is falling into the trap of the witch. Hence I design the my artwork to have some movement to it which shown by the eyes of snow white is looking towards the apple and feel like she is stepping forward.
Another thing is that the evil witch is hiding under the snow white to showcase that this is planned by her. Actually there was a happy accident happened which another witch reveal if looking at the artwork upside down.

    Feedback:
It is interesting and couldn't be expected that there are three objects hiding in one artwork.
Express the character in its simple form is showing showing the characteristic of gestalt. Lastly, Ms. Sherry did comment on the happy accident happened: "It is such a ugly witch."

    Lecture 1: Contrast

    03/04/19 - Week 1

Contrast emphasize the differences between 2 or more elements of art. It gives a sense of clear, bright, impact, visual interest and to create excitement. Contrast makes object stands out from one another, hence creating focal point that attract our visual focusing more on the different object.
    Figure 1.1  Researching on Contrast

There are different ways to express contrast:
    • Contrast between size
    • Contrast between empty space and rigid space
    • Contrast between diagonal line , horizontal line/vertical line
    • Contrast between Perpendicular line
    • Contrast between direction of the object
    • Contrast between formal and informal lettering
After done my researching on contrast, I set up the guide line for my artwork I want to make:
    • Purpose : to strengthen my idea
    • Target    : to create visual impact
    • Idea       : visualize sentence "There is always an EX in the NEXT"

Figure 1.2   Example on contrast to show impact and direction through lines.

I started to look at the example that could guide the visual flow to show direction and to create focus point. I realized that line is the most effective way in guiding visual flow hence I decided to use lines as my major design element.

Figure 1.3  Sketch out of ideas.

The Idea is to playing around with lines by trying on different ways to show contrast that best express the target I set which is to create direction, visual impact and focal point and the idea "There is always an EX in the NEXT".

Idea 1: Contrast between black and white
Taking the elements from the example, using of the rule of third to locate the corner of the arrow at the intersecting point hence, people tends to focusing more on it.

Idea 2: Contrast between perpendicular line & density
By making the lines in the arrow to become perpendicular to the background creates more visual interest and increase the density of line could increase on visual weight and attract more attention.

Idea 3: Contrast between density & direction
Lines that slowly changing in size show a direction towards right side while the huge empty space of arrow showing towards left side. A totally empty white space could be more stand out from the background.

    Idea 4: Contrast in colour
By changing the colour of particular part which highlighted the elements inside it and increasing the thickness of the selected arrow could emphasize on the meaning what I want to present.

    Final Artwork

Figure 1.4 & 1.5 Final Artwork of Contrast.

To emphasize more on the idea what I want to present, I decided to makes the arrow pop out a bit by making it into 3D and created a thin layer behind the EX inthe NEXT to brings out the meaning. Putting on a lot of contrast in it but the main contrast is that the high density of lines on the background and the pop out empty space of the arrow, so that people know that the focusing part is the arrow.

    Feedback:
A lot of things is going on here, good in playing the elements to create contrast, putting effort in it but workmanship still could be improved.
