Lecture 9: Typography in Different Medium
14/06/19 - week 11
Medium can be divided into two categories: Print & Screen
Type for Print
Type for print is to ensure that the text is smooth , flowing, and pleasant to read. The example are Caslon, Garamond, Baskerville are the most common used for print. It is because of their characteristic of elegant which make them highly readable in small font size.
Static Typography has minimal characteristic in expressing words. Playing with typefaces and the composition to express dynamic properties in a static way. This is mostly used in magazines, billboard and poster.
Type for Screen
Due to the variation of pixels which is the resolution of different screen and the variation of different browser or devices. Some typefaces cannot be present on certain screen. Hence, it will be result in the default type- Times New Roman.
People tends to feel tired when looking at the screen for a long time, hence the major different of screen type compare to print type is that type for screen has to be taller x-height, wider letterforms and more open counters. This would helps in people reading type on screen more easier.
Font Size for screen is 16 pixel which is about 12pt.
Web safe font or System font referring to the font that has been installed across all operating system. (e.g.Times New Roman, Lato, Helvetica, Arial, Open Sans, etc.)
I figure out my design concept for final project is when I am studying in the library and there was people gossiping around me, hence the I decided to visualize "Please Take Your Gossip Out of The Library".
FIrst is to emphasize on "please take your" to let people know that this is something important. At the same time, I am more focusing on the word "gossip" in terms of to show the expression of noise and want to get it out from somewhere. And I go for the idea developed from my first sketching.

FURTHER READING
As we are going to work on the final project hence, I am looking at information regrading graphic communication in this book. It is crucial to know the target audience before convey a message to them. As different people might look things differently. For example, Special Large print books were designed for children with weak sight but medical discouraged people with poor vision from using their eyes for "close" reading since it will be harmful to them.

Motion Typography Exist because of digital media allow it to show animation. Typographers has the opportunity to "dramatize" type, to make them become "fluid" and "kinetic". This is largely applied in film and movies which is to prepare audiences by evoking certain mood.
Lecture 10: Consultation of Final Project (Digitizing)
21/06/19 - week 12
This week has no lecture but consultation from Mr.Vinod and Mr. Samsule for final project individually. The idea is to finalized digitizing of our final project and start to animate it.

Week 11: Idea Generation & Digitalization
14/06/19
Figure 1.0 Sketches of Ideas with finalized idea (yellow circle)
(Please take your gossip out of the library)
FIrst is to emphasize on "please take your" to let people know that this is something important. At the same time, I am more focusing on the word "gossip" in terms of to show the expression of noise and want to get it out from somewhere. And I go for the idea developed from my first sketching.
These are the first attempt of the digitized version of my idea 1, in three different colour style while keeping the "rules of third" in mind when considering composition as well as using zig-zag concept in designing visual flow:
Figure 1.1 Digitized version with black(major) and yellow(highlight)
(Please take your gossip out of the library)
This is the very first idea, is to emphasize on the letter "O" by making into a door like shape and have the exit logo going out. Yellow inside is to highlight and to make it as the focal point.
Figure 1.1 Digitized version with black and yellow(major)
(Please take your gossip out of the library)
Second style is to show the importance of this by using black and yellow, which is a colour of bee, this could make people take it more serious as they would think this is something might have danger to them. Golden yellow is a great colour in attracting attention in the quiet library as well especially when the whole poster is in bright colour.
Figure 1.1 Digitized version with grey(major) and yellow(highlight)
(Please take your gossip out of the library)
Third style is using grey as the majority colour highlight with yellow. The whole poster is so desaturate while the only part with colour could show the importance of it. One-third of the bottom part has a darker colour to give it a sense of floor and covering parts of the word "Gossip' is to transform the letter "O" into a door shape without distortion.
Week 12: Digitalization & Animation
21/06/19
After seeking feedback from Mr. Vinod, I need to make some improvement on the silhouette of the man to make it look more realistic and also work on the shadow in different angle while considering the light source is from the door.

Animation
Figure 2.5 Man walking silhouette
(Please take your gossip out of the library)
In order to make the silhouette alive and look realistic, I use the free video of a silhouette of a man walking to replace the silhouette of I used in the previous design. As well as the shadow also replace with the same video and has adjust it in perspective.
Figure 2.6 Glitch Effect
(Please take your gossip out of the library)
When come to the animation part, the word "gossip" give me a feeling of noisy, frustrated and many things going on at a same time, hence I choose to animate it with glitch effect
Figure 2.7 First Attempt for Animation
(Please take your gossip out of the library)
While considering the reading visual flow, I make the word to appear by following the speed of a person when speaks normally. It is meant to not blend the man into the glitching effect and the noisy glitch disappear after he has went out, showing that all the noise also went out and finally can have a quiet environment to study. After considering how the shadow should end, Mr. Vinod has suggested me to make a block to cover it.

FEEDBACK
Individual Feedback:One sketching is not enough, please come out with few more. You are almost there, just refine your idea. May proceed with the first idea. Good composition!
Week 13 - 28/06/19
Individual Feedback:
I need to make a block to cover the shadow while it it ending instead of make it follow the man to move into the letterform "O". Also O could increase the line spacing f my e-portfolio, it is hard to read. Well done, Excellent work!
Week 14 - 05/07/19
General Feedback
Exercises: 2 submission of lettering exercise: static design and animated lettering, show the personality to express in bracket.
Project 1: Exported JPEG and PDF
Project 2: all the letters on one artboard on the baseline, either in a row or two rows, export that artboard and upload it. JPEG and PDF of final composition
Final Project: JPEG, PDF and a Animated GIF.
Reflection: It is the reflection of the entire semesters, relook at it again, sum up your experiences and findings which maintaining and keeping in e-portfolio, what are the pros and cons depending on your experience. In your finding, mention suggestion you feel that you find could be make better in the next semester.
Lastly, open it in e-portfolio and relook at it to make sure line spacing, point size, and make sure all links are activated.
Individual Feedback:
Maku sure that the artwork uploaded onto the e-blog have a border, export the artboard, not the selection. Please make all your PDF file public.
Week 11 - 14/06/19
Week 12 - 21/06/19
Individual Feedback:
I. Mr. Vinod suggest me to work on the silhouette of the person instead of using the symbol. Composition is good but shadow doesn't look like a shadow and the white colour of man with yellow background making it not obvious.
II. Using two different fonts in one artwork just like mixing two ridiculous colour together. Using consistent font could make it look as one. Please beware of the space between every single block, be consistent. It is fine if there is a larger space at the top compare to bottom.
III. flatten the shadow and making it white instead of black. May proceed to animation.

REFLECTION
Experiences:
I am getting better in doing projects, not feeling lost like previous time. I think is because I get prepared after all lectures are done and finally get used to the way of learning in such design class. Actively seeking feedback and work on the spot and repeat this. This is what I can't do previously especially work on the class but I am getting used to it now. With the help from lecturers and correcting mistakes frequently helps me to know how should a typographer/ a designer thoughts is like as I am learning the thinking process along the way from lecturers.
Observations:
Observations:
When come to designing something to convey a message, I found that the overall feeling at the first glimpse is much more important. It must to have a clear and great composition in order to make it readable, understandable, and also come out with a strong, solid, core idea so that message receiver could know the idea instantly and efficiently. Not to say that detail is not important anymore, it is, actually, when people get impressed at the first glimpse then they would start to look at the details, every details play important role in enhancing the core idea. The purpose of designing a poster must to have a strong idea with everything inside it is to support that idea, hence conveying a impactful message with strong impression.
Findings:
When at the final stage of this semester, we need to print out our projects, from that, I get to know there is actually so much different when type on screen and when type on print medium. I really appreciate the last lecture given by Mr. Shamsul on the topic "Type in different medium". This helps me to realized actually there is so much theory behind it, it is not just printing out stuff but is to adjust some settings just to make things print out and it will look the same as we look from the screen. I not even can tell is there something wrong when I cannot open certain font on another computer until here, there is actually problems with pixels, operating system, browser etc. affecting these.
Besides, I realized that there is so much things to consider when inserting a realistic silhouette into my design, including the lighting, shapes, the way to walk, a small vibration after each steps, etc. There is still so much things for me to explore and learn, this is just a tip of a tip of the iceberg. I should prepare me well in the following semesters.

Nowadays, we can see fly posters, sticker or graffiti everywhere, some of them are designed by designers, some are not. Some of the "nondesigned" typography will have been made with commercial or political intent, some will be serendipitous, or caused by neglect. For example, the hand-drawn notice attract attention because we seem to be naturally drawn to anything that is unexpected. A hurriedly drawn price sign on a market stall seems like working well without feeling inappropriate due to the product of its fresh fruit. But if a permanent sign is hurriedly done, its informality will be perceived to be inappropriate.
