Reference of a collage

From this example, I am looking at how it has used collage to create confusing and puzzled expression of a person, it is using a weaving technique similar in making packaging of  "ketupat", a malay traditional food. The way it reshuffle the photo allowing me to experience the confuse of how is that person in. However, I still manage to observe some part of his face. This is the part that probably I could make use of to mix different emotion of me. 

Reference of a photography

In this photograph, it shows a person inside a person, I am imaging that it is showing something to come out from that person, maybe is another her, the inner side of her. From that, I want to apply the same technique to express my introvert personality. I could try to use "me" to cover another "me". It show makes people wonder what is the inside could be, which can be apply on a introvert's thoughts are unpredictable.

Process

Identifying Personality

Through mind-mapping, I was firstly come out with three personalities that are best describe me, which is imperfect, introvert and puzzled. After continuing develop ideas in how it should come out and how could I visualize it at the final stage. I assume that puzzled and introvert could work well together and to express in mutually benefits way:

Introvert needed to be express through two layers of objects in order to show that there is something deep hiding inside one another. Hence, Puzzled could be the outer layer in hiding the introvert me. Imperfect could not work well as I need to left parts of it to be hollow or empty which would destroy the expression of introvert by showing too  much of it.

Hence, the chosen personalities are PUZZLED AND INTROVERT.

Taking Pictures

  

Firstly of course is to take photograph of me, in different expression such as anger, confused, calm, hopeless, tired.

Outer Layer

Next is to select one artwork with not much expression as base and another is extremely emotion which is anger to have the contrast in constructing puzzled emotion.

Then, come to the most time consuming part which is to edit the calm face into faceless "me" in order to push the emotion into extreme. Cutting out the anger face. And, desaturate both of the photo.

Inner Layer

Remain the colour as the contrast with outer layer.

Cut and Paste

Following step is to print it out and cut it into strips for weaving purpose. and stick the inner layer as the base with slight curve to make it pop out. Then, paste the outer layer which is mixed of two emotion with slight curve as well.

Final Artwork

This artwork is to show my two personalities: Puzzled and Introvert.

The outer layer showing puzzled through mixing two emotion in extremely contrast way using weaving pattern: anger and faceless(emotionless), upright and upside down. It gives itself feeling of texture and increasing the complexity in terms of structure to support the puzzled personality.

The inner layer in colour which has a strong contrast compare to outer layer shows introvert. The colour inside means that this is the real "me", with thoughts and mindfulness, observing the world outside and hiding myself in my safe comfort zone.

Pop-out effect is to enhance on the emotion as it only pop out at the face area hence, people tend to feel like it is alive.

Feedback

It feels pulling the audience into it, showing a impactful expression of what I trying to convey. It still some how can observe the face but is all mix up, it has created confusing feeling.
The colour inner layer shows contrast and only showing his eyes feels like someone living inside staring at you.
