Exercise 01: Vormator Challenge
04/04/19 - week 1

In the first class, we are introduced to the Adobe Illustrator with basic manipulation skills such as tracing using pen tools, fillings and stroke etc. The first exercise was to create a vormator by only using the shapes provided below:

My design intention is to create something that is cute and healing little monster. It might need to be chubby and with short hands and legs like corgi.

The shapes I selected are:
  • Zerk        -  hands & legs: looking at its extended characteristic
  • Drop       -  head and tail: looking at its round and perfect circle edge
  • Badge    -  throat: looking at its rounded corner
  • Bar         -  body: because of it give a sense of chubby
  • Wurst     -  ear: looking at the long curvy characteristic

Exercise 02: Forms, Shapes and Shadows
09/04/19 - week 2

This week's lesson was to learn how to draw 3D object in perspective and some basic knowledge on identifying variation of shades .

Firstly, draw a outline box as the angle of perspective and proceed to fill in the details of the object in the box while using it as a refer guide line.

Next, identify and figure out different shades of shadow at different area according to where the light source is. Three tones was using is to create a more realistic shadow.

Next, guideline on the object is required while drawing on curved surface. Differentiate it into different area and colour with different tones of shadows.

Homework is to identify shadow of robots with two light sources.

Exercise 03: Digital Light and Shadow
16/04/19 - week 3

We learned how to create shades digitally in illustrator with the help of pen tools, brush tools and pathfinder.

This is the pear that we need to trace it out and create shades. Next is to trace out the figure of a skull and use it as the shadow of the pear.

This week's exercise was to using to knowledge and skills learnt in this class to create light and shadow for our own vormator so that it will not look "flat". Besides, we learnt how to extract colour from other's artwork using eyedropper tool.

Exercise 04: Facial Expressions
23/04/19 - week 4

This week we learnt how to draw facial expression using markers and also the technique of "to free our hand". A new technique to me as I realized I am still using the technique of kids in secondary school to draw things. One more step closer to become a professional designer.

Exercise 05
14/05/19 - week 7

Today's lesson was to learn how to do shading with apply with different kind of technique (lines and dots)

Exercise 06
14/05/19 - week 7

In this week's lesson, we learnt how to create our own brush and painting in Adobe Photoshop with applying of blending mode and using this technique to redraw the pear in 6 different shading approaches.

  • Multiply: to darker the colour selected
  • Screen: to create a lighter colour
I created the brush using example from here.
