LECTURE NOTES

Week 8
18/10/19

For this week, we got a lecture on research strategy. The first part we discussed about was two types of research method which are quantitative and qualitative. The difference is that quantitative can be measured while qualitative can be subjective.

Figure 1 Examples of the difference between the two research methods

Week 9
25/10/19

This week, we got a lecture on the various research methods for data collection. These methods of research through primary sources include observation, interview as well as questionnaire.

Week 8
18/10/19

The task for this week is to start thinking about the research designs to collect the necessary data.

Feedback:  Beware of research ethics when interviewing. Next week please come out with graphic designers name list and questions prepared for interview. Justify why choose the brands, designers, approaches. No asking of question includes feeling or liking. Might show part of the logo and test whether users could recognize the brand or not, come out with questions base on reading. Read up the articles which closely relate to my research objectives. Do consider what makes a successful communication in terms of design.

Week 9
25/10/19

Ms Jinchi advised us to continue thinking about our research methods. While coming up with ideas, we should also take into consideration of what are the questions asked, why do I want to conduct such methods, who are going to be involved, how am I going to conduct it and so on.

After some thinking and planning, I decided to go with qualitative methods such as online interview and visual analysis while quantitative methods such as survey by questionnaire.

Figure 5 First Draft

FeedbackShould justify why select this three graphic designers, maybe is because they are the one who know best about this. Justify why study formal qualities. Define how well-known Starbucks is while justifying. In first section, remove Q3, Q4 and Q5, Q1 & Q6 is good, Modify Q2 and Change Q7 to how do you know your message is convey successfully to the consumers. In second methodology, Q2: provide elements and may select multiple answer. Q3: don't use the term "landing page" as no one understand and evaluate the YES to Q4, NO to Q5. Q4: why yes, give options(reasons). Q5: why no, give options(reasons). Same goes to original Q5. Add one section after original Q4 & Q5: do you know how to gain more info/ how to access to other page (ask about navigation system). Overall is good, complete, well structured and questions are well design. Please send this to 100 people.

Week 10
01/11/19
I have sent out email to:

njk@simplychocolate.dk

yxlove07@hotmail.com

Due to not getting any response from the designers, hence I am no longer conducting an email interview, I removed it and replace it with Visual Analysis.

Figure 7 Second Draft
Feedback:
(i)    Q6 should change another website to ask, different from Simply Chocolate
(ii)   After Q5 should ask the same question as Q9
(iii)  Make sure all terms used are consistent (Q1/question 1, Uppercase...etc)
(iv)  Used the term “typeface” and clarify its definition in brackets.
(v)   All option came out should justify from the literature review

Week 11
08/11/19
No class due to Design School Event.
Submission

For the questionnaire, it’s good that I’ve gotten sufficient amount of responses, and start to analyse the responses. As for the visual analysis, the process is going well and for now, I can further elaborate on my explanation and analysis of what I observed. I can also include my own interpretations of it as well.

With the feedback received, I proceeded to update on the contents in my visual analysis and continue to receive more survey responses.

Feedback received after submission:

Clarity of selection & justification of research methods
While there is definition for semi-structured interview and survey, you should relate it to your research objective. For “Aspects to be focused on”, you do need to justify how you identified these variables and why you deem them important qualities for your study.

Besides providing justification, interview questions need to be supported by research. For quantitative research, it should be Survey by Questionnaire, not just Questionnaire. A questionnaire simply means a set of questions that can be for any purpose. Research support is needed for the justification of survey participants. The use of Google Forms is not justified.

Relevance of research implementation
The visual analysis is conducted with much organisation through dissecting each brand’s visual elements and categorising them. Much clarity is found in the writing. The last section of the visual analysis could be more elaborate, bringing together all that has been described into the picture. The survey results are clearly described but only some analysis is found.
