Lecture 1: Preparing For Your Dissertation

In the first class of this module, we were briefed and introduced to what this module is about and how this module is an advancement of the previous semester's module which is Design Research Methodology.
Firstly, we focused on the section of analysis and discussion. Prior to that, we had to create a research matrix to identify the similar themes and keywords from the research data collected. For each keyword/topic, we needed columns for the details, literature, and collected data.

Week 02
Please number your research objectives and research questions, do not use the title of "why Haidilao", but change it to "rationale for brand selection". Show primary data and support it with secondary data. For the first research objective is fine, but refine the second research objective to "To study the effects of how do graphical elements work to convey the brand message on the website". Standardize the terms use "on website" for my research problem instead of "online". My data looks like themes, data could be extracted from my secondary data. Next week shows a descriptive part from an introductory level to a more complex level.

Week 04
Introduction in every section should describe this section has broken into how many parts and why you do so. The in-text citation should within the coma of the sentence as the sentence hasn't ended yet. My 6.1 seems not necessary, hence, Dr Jinchi advised me to combine 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3, where talk about the evaluation of graphic design and relate it to website design. The history background should keep it short. In the same section, state the formal qualities in relation to the topic in general. Then when starting from 6.4 I should keep relating to my case study and secondary data as supportive information.
Besides, I should discuss the same topic for readability, hierarchy, focus point in 2 different ways. One discusses only about the visual manner while the other one discuss about the effectiveness of it. In the introduction, state this point clearly and define what is visual communication and how to measure the effectiveness.
The other thing to be noticed is that should keep on looking at the research problem to keep me on the right track. I shouldn't describe brand message as brand identity, the brand message is the perception that a brand wants the consumer to perceive but a consumer might perceive it in a different perspective.
Besides, I should discuss the same topic for readability, hierarchy, focus point in 2 different ways. One discusses only about the visual manner while the other one discuss about the effectiveness of it. In the introduction, state this point clearly and define what is visual communication and how to measure the effectiveness.

In the last paragraph of graphic design, seems like I have lost connection from graphic design, focus on the technology. Link it back. In the formal qualities, it is fine to eaither show example and images of general website or case study. Either one will do. Introduce what is formal qualities, complementary colour....logo is not formal qualities.
In 6.2, I need to clarify the structure first: there is 2 main session, the first session will talk about visual communication and it will be supported from three aspects. same goes to the second session. Then ensure that to show picture for relating data and examples. In the discussion, please specifically talk about the related topic. e.g. hierarchy: the principle of hierarchy, application of hierarchy.
Please send the file individually early, as it takes 1-2 days for ms.jinchi to look at it. It is fine to send it over the weekend, and wait for the reply. Need to catch up on my progression.

Week 06
It is good for me to argue with my research, why is it like this and how to improve. If it is against my statement, it is totally fine. So I can know the importance of it. The point is an investigation. Hence, I could discuss the pros and cons of the summary in each session.
I should first introduce how the website looks like as general, but the images shown must need to be explained in the following sessions. It is to describe everything on the website, the menu, the logo, the globe etc.
